I want to talk about Darkness… Not about the scientific sense of the word, but more about our perceptions of darkness and how we react to it.

So I ask the question, What is it like to be in darkness?

Temptation: Don't Run and Hide

Year C, Lent 2, 2013

Luke 13:31-35 (click on the scripture to read it)

The joy of having multiple preachers in a parish is that we are able to experience Holy Scripture from different voices coming from diverse perspectives.  These diverse perspectives originate through our preachers’ personal experiences with the Divine.  Whether it’s from age, gender, or cultural experiences, it is the preacher’s unique perspective from which their insights about God are revealed.

We are gathered here today to celebrate the incarnation…, to celebrate God becoming human.  But why did God become incarnate?

Giddyup or Whoa... Who's Holding the Reins?

Who has authority over us in our everyday lives?

One aspect of authority would be the structure of society.  We the people, or at least we the majority of the people, build a set of authoritative structures that we live within.  These structures, that we are very blessed to have a voice in designing, are intended to keep us from harming ourselves and others…structures that should be laid out for the common good of our society.  The result of this communal authoritative process, or rather democratic process, gives us our laws.

Annual Parish Meeting: Proclaiming is NOT enough!

The Rector’s Report: January 22, 2012

Mark 1:14-20  (click on the scripture to read it)

Proclaiming is NOT enough!

The Church is a complex system of relationships.  I’m not just talking about St. Paul’s; I’m talking about the Church worldwide; I’m talking about all the people who believe in Jesus Christ.  We are a part of that complex system of relationships, a system that started with the words, “Follow me”.

Green Shirts, Green Shorts, and Green Knee High Socks

My dad was an Eagle Scout and my brother was a Boy Scout too.  I was not a Boy Scout, though I was a Cub Scout for a couple of years.  Scouting didn’t keep my interest, or at least not enough to compete with the time I devoted to sports.  I learned a lot from sports, but I could have probably used a little scouting in my earlier years.

An Honest Day…for Honest Pay

Do you know how much minimum wage in Nevada? I didn’t.  I had to look it up, and my lack of knowledge spoke to me right there.   Minimum wage in Nevada is 7.25 per hour if you are receiving health benefits from your employer. It is 8.25 per hour if you are NOT receiving employer health benefits.  If a worker is lucky enough to be able to work 8 hours in a day, their minimum wage job (without health benefits) would earn them $66.00 a day before taxes.  A days wage in Jesus’ time was a denarii.
